Muzzle Device Anatomy

Brake, Comp, Hider or Linear

Each design trades one thing for another.

Recoil & Rise

Brakes & Compensators

  • Muzzle brake Side ports redirect gas rearward; biggest recoil cut, loudest to bystanders.
  • Compensator Upward ports push the muzzle down; fastest follow-up shots.
  • Hybrid Most 5/8x24 devices here do both.
  • Breacher Comp with a toothed face for standoff.
  • Material Steel with black nitride or 303 stainless.
Signature & Blast

Hiders & Linear Comps

  • Flash hider Prongs or birdcage break up the fireball; minimal recoil effect.
  • Linear comp Directs all blast forward; quietest at the shooter's ear.
  • Flash can Linear device with a large forward chamber; often anodized.
  • Suppressor mount Some devices double as mounts; check the listing.
  • Thread 5/8x24 for .30 and 6.5 bores; 1/2x28 for .22 bores.
Before You Order

Choosing a 5/8x24 Muzzle Device

Thread, bore and purpose.

Thread Pitch

5/8x24 is the standard for .308, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6mm ARC, 7.62x39 and most 300 Blackout barrels. Our AR-10 barrels and 7.62x39 AR-15 barrels are all 5/8x24.

Bore Diameter

A .30 caliber device passes .308, 300 BLK and 7.62x39. 6.5 and 6mm bullets pass through a .30 bore with clearance. Never run a .30 bullet through a 6.5-bore device.

Timing

Brakes and compensators must be timed with a crush washer or shims so the ports face the right way. Flash hiders with symmetrical prongs do not need timing.

Range Etiquette

Brakes throw blast sideways. If you shoot next to other people, a linear comp or flash hider is friendlier.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Will a 5/8x24 muzzle device fit my AR-15?

Only if the barrel is threaded 5/8x24, which is standard on 7.62x39, 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC and most 300 Blackout AR-15 barrels. 5.56 and .223 barrels are 1/2x28.

  • What is the difference between a muzzle brake and a compensator?

A brake ports gas sideways and rearward to reduce recoil. A compensator ports gas upward to reduce muzzle rise. Most modern devices, including the Vigilance compensators here, do both.

  • What is a linear compensator?

A device that directs all muzzle blast and noise forward. It does little for recoil but makes the rifle far more pleasant for the shooter and anyone beside them.

  • Do I need a crush washer?

Brakes and compensators with directional ports need a crush washer or shim kit to time the ports. Check the product page; some devices include one.

  • Do muzzle devices require an FFL?

No. These are small parts and accessories that ship directly to you in all 50 states with no FFL required.
