Start with what you want to shoot. Each caliber below links to the barrels we stock, with length, profile and gas system listed on every product page.

01

5.56 NATO & .223 Wylde

The workhorse. Our .223 Wylde barrels in 416R stainless with black nitride and a 1:8 twist shoot both 5.56 and .223 accurately, and the 24" 5.56 stainless barrel is built for long-range varmint and match work. Fluted options cut weight without giving up rigidity.

02

.22 ARC & .338 ARC

Hornady's ARC cartridges bring long-range performance to the AR-15. We stock .22 ARC barrels in 18", 20" and 24" (chrome moly or stainless) and a 16" .338 ARC barrel for a hard-hitting suppressed short rifle.

03

6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC II & .400 Legend

Mid-bore and straight-wall options. The 22" 6.5 Grendel reaches past 800 yards, the 10.5" 6.8 SPC II makes a compact hunting pistol, and the 20" .400 Legend in chrome moly or stainless is built for straight-wall deer states.

04

7.62x39 & 300 Blackout

Caliber-specific categories with their own barrels, bolts and uppers.

Barrel Anatomy

Specs That Matter

Every barrel listing carries the same handful of specs. Here is what each one changes.

Material

Steel & Finish

  • 4150 CMV Chrome moly vanadium; tough, affordable, parkerized or nitrided.
  • 416R stainless Match-grade accuracy and corrosion resistance; often black nitride finished.
  • Black nitride Surface hardening that adds wear and rust resistance to either steel.
  • Parkerized Phosphate finish standard on mil-spec CMV barrels.
  • Fluting Bear claw or straight flutes cut weight and speed cooling.
Geometry

Length, Twist & Gas

  • Length 10.5" pistol and SBR to 24" precision; 16" is the rifle minimum.
  • Twist rate 1:8 for .223 Wylde covers 55 to 77 grain; 1:10 for 7.62x39.
  • Gas length Carbine, mid or rifle; must match the gas tube you order.
  • Profile Heavy, government or lightweight; heavy stays accurate as it heats.
  • Muzzle thread 1/2x28 for .22 caliber bores, 5/8x24 for .30 and 6.5 bores.
Before You Order

Choosing the Right AR-15 Barrel

Five decisions cover almost every build.

Rifle or Pistol Length

A 16" or longer barrel keeps a rifle build out of NFA territory. 10.5" barrels are for pistol builds with a brace, or registered SBRs. Know which you are building before you order.

Twist Rate

Match twist to bullet weight. Our .223 Wylde barrels use 1:8, which stabilizes everything from 55 to 77 grain. Heavier bullets want faster twist; light varmint bullets tolerate slower.

Gas Length

The barrel's gas port position sets the gas tube you need. Order the matching gas block and tube combo in the same length listed on the barrel.

Bolt Compatibility

5.56, .223 Wylde and .22 ARC share a standard 5.56 bolt face on most builds; 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC II, 7.62x39, .338 ARC and .400 Legend need dedicated bolts. Shop matching bolt carrier groups.

Stainless or Chrome Moly

416R stainless barrels tend to shoot tighter groups and resist corrosion; 4150 CMV barrels handle high round counts and cost less. Both are stocked in most calibers.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What calibers do your AR-15 barrels come in?

5.56 NATO, .223 Wylde, .22 ARC, .338 ARC, 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC II, .400 Legend and 7.62x39, in lengths from 10.5" to 24". 300 Blackout barrels are listed in their own category.

  • What is the difference between .223 Wylde and 5.56?

.223 Wylde is a chamber design that safely fires both 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington while holding tighter tolerances than a 5.56 chamber. It is the accuracy choice for a rifle that will shoot both loads.

  • Which twist rate should I choose?

1:8 is the all-round choice for .223 Wylde and 5.56, covering 55 to 77 grain bullets. 7.62x39 barrels run 1:10. Twist is listed on every product page.

  • Do I need a new bolt for a different caliber?

For 5.56, .223 Wylde and .22 ARC, a standard 5.56 bolt works. 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC II, 7.62x39, .338 ARC and .400 Legend need a dedicated bolt carrier group with the correct bolt face.

  • What muzzle thread do your barrels have?

.22 caliber bores (5.56, .223 Wylde, .22 ARC) use 1/2x28. 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, 7.62x39 and .338 ARC use 5/8x24. .400 Legend thread is listed on the product page.

  • Do barrels require an FFL to ship?

Barrels ship directly to most addresses. Shipments to CA, WA, CT, NJ, New York City or Chicago require an FFL address. Review our shipping restrictions before ordering.
